Oil Spill/Leak Disaster

This is a picture I found online. At first glance, it can very well be a picture of a painting - oil painting, maybe? It's OIL alright but it's not a painting. It's a picture of the oil spill in the Gulf. It's now about a month and a half - 45 days to be exact - since the oil spill. Sadly, even after numerous tries to fix it, there seems to be no end to this disaster.

Here in the sunshine state, the people are bracing themselves because the oil is expected to reach the white beaches in the panhandle as early as tomorrow - Friday, 4th of June. Thousands of tar balls are on their way to mar some of the most beautiful beaches in the state. If and when that happens, they're saying that those beaches that will be affected will never be the same again. I hope not....

After weeks of not coming here, I am now doing what I should have done a week or so ago. But I wasn't able to... so I'm doing it now.

Nothing much has happened between now and the last time I posted here but I feel like I have a different perspective in life now. I went through what I'd like to call a 'roller coaster' ride in the last few weeks but all's good now. Without going into too much detail, I had some kind of a health scare about 3 weeks ago. I didn't take any chance and went to my doctor right away and he ordered some tests for me. The result? Good. Not superb since I still need to go for a follow in a few months but at least I can now breathe easily again.

Waiting for the doctor's call was nerve-wrecking. There was not a day that I didn't feel like crying or breaking down. But life had to go on so I tried very hard to keep my mind off it but with very little success. One minute I'd be laughing and being care-free, the next minute I'd be sulking and thinking of the what-ifs. All I could think about was our little one who is still very much dependent on Mommy. The husband is of course very supportive and was trying to be positive. But his face showed how worried he was. Pimples all over. I didn't know he'd be that affected with what was going on with me. I was wrong.

But that's all water under the bridge now. Life's a lot sweeter now and I try not to ignore even the slightest thing that happens around me and in me. For now, I'm just thankful I'm alive...

Reasons

That's what I believe in. In more cases than one, THIS proverb has helped me get through some really difficult phase in my life. Most of the time, the 'REASON' comes years after...and sometimes, that's the only time I would realize why things happened the way they did.

Right now, I am in a situation where I'm trying to stay positive. Generally, life has been good to me. Yes, there are ups and downs like a 'roller coaster' but that's life. Even though I am not a fan of this 'thrill' ride, I have no choice but to accept that life is indeed like a roller coaster. I am hoping and praying that things will work out for the better...whatever that is!

...not forgotten!

I can't remember how many times I tried to update this blog in the past several weeks but I always come up short. Sigh....

So what gives? Not quite sure, honestly. I know I am not THAT busy. I guess it's just my being lazy most of the time. Not a good thing since I have a responsibility to update this blog at least once a week or even once a month. I guess my blog's title of "Wahm Talks!" is not apt anymore. Maybe I should just change it to something more appropriate like 'Wahm Sleeps'?

Anyway, since it's been almost 2 months since the last time I updated this blog, I have a gazillion things to write about. Where to start? How about from the beginning, maybe?

April: Birthday! There is only ONE important event [for my family anyway] this month. It's the little one's birthday. Yep, my baby has turned another year older this month. Just like her other birthdays, we celebrated it as a family. I had a doctor's appointment on that day. Dad decided to take the day off and we spent it running errands. We were out most of the day but we had a great time because we rarely have the time to do that now. Aside from our day out, we also had the 'traditional' ice cream & cake and opening of gifts.

May: Mother's Day! The little one likes to celebrate in her own little way so anything on the calendar that's marked is worth celebrating to her and Mother's Day is definitely one of those 'celebrations'. Normally, she and Dad go out together to find me a gift. They've been doing that since she was around 4. Before that, Dad would get something and just asked her to give it to me. This year though, we did something different for this day. We went GO-CARTING! It was my first time to be on the 'wheels' of a go-cart. Hubby thinks it's the closest I can get to driving a real car. After the go-cart escapades, we decided to hit some balls...in the miniature golf they had in the amusement park. After golf, we let the little one play in the arcade for a few...then we headed home.

All in all, both events turned out pretty well. We diverted from the 'norm' [here] and it proved to be great fun. Maybe next year we can also think of doing something different to celebrate. In the meantime, the little one is waiting for the next 'event' which is Father's Day. I am hoping I can blog about that much earlier than I blogged the last 2 events.

Spring Weather

... is the best!! To me anyway.

The weather was great the past several days prior to yesterday. It rained cats and dogs yesterday afternoon until early this morning that's why. BUT...that's only for half a day yesterday so all is good because today, it's GORGEOUS out there once again.

As I stated in my post before this one, I AM NOW TRYING to focus more on the good things more than the bad things. It's actually easier to do the opposite but why dampen your good spirit with one bad [weather] day amidst all the sunshiny days we've been having around here, right?

This weekend, the husband was also able to take a full day's off after months of working like a horse. He's been working 16-hour days [sometimes longer], 7 days a week so yesterday was very much welcome & needed. We took advantage of his day off by spending family time in one of the mini-golf course attractions not too far from where we live. It's our second time to do that and we all had a blast. The first time we did, I didn't participate. Kill-joy me, eh? But I'm a KJ no more because I joined in the putt-putt yesterday. Hep-hep-hurray! Hubby kept on saying: I really enjoyed that! Tee-hee...

Aside from the mini-golf 'tourney', we also did some mining where we collected 'jewels' [ semi-precious stones - from a bag of dirt] the old fashion way....shaking off the dirt in water to look for that oh-so precious stone. Evertime there's a colored stone, the little one would blurt out: We're rich! Umm..not quite baby. She really enjoyed the mining tremendously that we're now thinking of doing it for real...going to a real mine-site either the one in North Carolina or Arkansas. That would be FUN, FUN, FUN....so I'm crossing my fingers that we can do that one day.

And I've been blessed many times in my life so I better start counting them or I may just lose count, eh?

This is also the same topic I posted in my other blog PinayWahm, only here, I'd like to focus more in counting work-at-home related blessings. How's that?

The reason for this post is simple. I want to concentrate more on the good things that happen to me [and my family] instead of sulking and complaining about the not-so-good things. Who is with me on this? You? I hope so.

"Work is SLOW." That's probably my biggest complain. I knew when I decided to be a WAHM that this is the case. Work will not always be busy. So why do I whine about it? Human nature maybe? It seems to be the case when things are not what we want them to be. But I'll try to look at the positive side. When work is slow, it gives me more time to do some other things like chores around the house and more bonding time with the little one and the not so little one [aka hubby]. Time off from work also gives me time to relax, slow down and just be away from my laptop...which is VERY rare. From now on, hopefully, I'll find less reason to complain about and more reasons to be grateful about. So there...

Speaking of being grateful, I just heard from a job I applied for so many months ago. I have not been hired yet but knowing that there is still something out there for 'me' is something I'm excited about. It's not related to any of my present work-at-home jobs BUT it's something I can also do from home. Isn't that exciting? So if you are looking for a job, be it something you want to do from home or a job out of the home, just keep on applying. Don't let the economy deter you from turning in your resume. One of these days you may just get a call for something you applied for months [even a year] ago. Then you'll know what I mean....

Cute. Amusing. These are the 2 words that came to mind when I heard this audio recording of a child directing flights in one of the busiest airport in the US - JFK airport in NY.

After getting over the 'cuteness' of it, reality sets in. Did that really happen? Did a child [probably younger than 10 years old] just directed flights from the air traffic controls towers? Apparently it happened and it's now making headline news around the country [world?]. The father who is a certified air traffic controller and his supervisor are now suspended pending an investigation of this particular incident.

The pilots listening to the little child's direction were obviously amused by it since they went along with it...and even praised the 'junior' traffic controller at one point.

I have a feeling the person/s responsible for this will be in the spotlight for quite sometime following this controversy. I can't wait what he has to say as to why he let his child take the reigns and allowed him to direct air traffic.

Still.

I didn't have the chance to read more about transferring this blog to Wordpress platform that's why I'm still not sure if I want to move it or not. Let me correct that. I WANT to move it BUT I still don't know how.

In other news.

Work is SLOW. Very slow. I haven't heard anything from one of the companies I work for in more than a month. I am hoping there's just no work available. It's unnerving to think of the possible reasons why [they've been so quiet] but I'm holding on. I'm not totally idle because I still have blogging and my other WAHJs to keep me 'somehow' occupied.

On the other hand, hubby is still very busy. He doesn't have any day off anymore because it's just him and a partner who work in their shop now. They hired a couple of people to help them during the start of this job. Unfortunately, it didn't work they wanted it to so they had to let go of those people.

Right now I'm just thankful that he has a job and that he comes home every night after a long day's work. I can't imagine him working somewhere else and only coming home over the weekend. That's a reality that a lot of people need to face. I just read about this man who had to do just that...move 1,000 miles away from family to keep his job.

Decisions...decisions!

I have not updated this blog for quite sometime. A month, to be exact. I got a wee bit busy with my other blogs as well as with my other WaHJs. Work has been so sporadic lately that I try to catch it whenever it's released. Sometimes I get lucky, some other times, not so.

Anyway, I am thinking of moving this blog in wordpress. I have no idea how to do it but I can learn, right? I didn't know anything about blogger when I started blogging but here I am almost 3 years since I started. I'm guessing that in 3 years, I'll be saying the same thing. LOL....

I already started reading about wordpress but so far, nothing is making sense to me. I know some people who would be more than willing to help me out but I want to figure it out myself first. If and when I get stuck, they I'll 'probably' ask someone to help me out. For now, I'll take my time and read as much as I can to learn the ins & outs and everything in-between about importing & having a blog using the WP platform. Wish me luck????

TYLENOL Massive Recall....Please Read !

Not too long ago, I posted about a recall on Tylenol for Children/Infants. This time, the recall is for the ones that the adult population take.

I'm a Tylenol user so seeing this massive recall in the news is a bit alarming to me. I only use it when my headache or some pain just wouldn't go away resulting to me not being able to function and do some needed tasks online and/or off line. The bottle of Tylenol that we have was bought several months ago so I'm not even sure if I should worry about the recall. Benadrly allergy medicine is also in the list of recalled products but not the one I use daily.

What triggered the recall? Moldy smell that made some people sick. According to the FDA about 70 people have been reported to have gotten sick ranging from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pains. I and my family have not experienced any of that so maybe the one we have is not included in the recall.

In case you have a bottle of Tylenol, Motrin or St. Joseph's aspirin in you medicine cabinet you should probably check if it has a moldy smell. If it smells, maybe you can dispose the bottle altogether. A full list of the medicines that are recalled can be found HERE. Take some time to check the list just to be on the safe side. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Decade Past...Revisited

Has it really been 10 years since the so-called Y2K? I can barely remember the different 'horror' stories being circulated around that time but I can remember that it was all for NOTHING! I was still teaching in Taiwan when 1900 bid us goodbye. Year 1999, I remember spending the only Christmas I spent in that country which turned out to be one of the biggest regrets in my life. It was my mother's last Christmas with us and I chose to spend it away from her. Yep, a decision I would never forget...

As I start this new decade, I want to go back in the decade past and list 10 things that happened to me during the last 10 years ~ good & bad ~ which changed my life forever.

1) 2000 - ~ A year of mourning ~ Year 2000 saw me losing both my parents ~ just 4 months apart. Life changed drastically for me after their passing because my life revolved around them when they were still around. I was left with the question: What do I do now?

2) 2001 - ~ Hello, Love - Online ~ Meeting my other half....half across the world...thanks to technology! Early part of this paticular year, I met my now-husband online.

3) 2001 - ~ I do! ~ Marrying my other half. Yep, meeting online, meeting in person, meeting family & friends and marrying my husband all happened in the same year - in a span of 4 months...

4) 2002 - ~ A Child is Born! ~ Our child, that is. Welcoming our little angel. Exactly a year after 'meeting', the husband and I had our little bundle of joy.

5) 2002 - ~ WAHM Journey Begins ~. The same year our little one was born, I also started my journey of being a work at home mom. My first official 'WAHJ' was online tutoring which lasted for about 2 years. From there, my other work-at-home jobs came rolling in....

6) 2004 - ~ Home Sweet Home ~ Or is it? We decided to have our first family home built this year which turned out to be one of the biggest trials we would have as a family. The original builder of our dream home turned out to be crook who is now languishing in jail for ripping off 100+ families of hard-earned money.

7) 2007 - ~ Home Sweet Home, For Real ~ After the heartache, emotional roller coaster ride and financially draining experience we had with the crook builder, we finally decided to hire another contractor to build our home sweet home.

8) 2007 - ~ Hello Blogging! ~ After months of lurking in the blogging world aka "blogsphere", I finally decided to take the plunge and started my first blog. About 2 years+, I now have 2 other blogs, this one - WAHM Talks! & Pinay WAHM...plus another one I created for my high school batch in preparation for our just concluded Silver Jubilee.

9) 2008 - ~ GUILTY!!! ~ The year started with a bang for us....the builder who screwed us was sentenced to jail for 20 years! Justice is served!!!

10) 2008 - ~ Moving Day, At last! ~ The year we finally moved in to our very first family home. It only took 4 long years overcoming bumps along the way...but we made it.

Ten years is a long time. A lot of things had happened to me and my family during the past decade. The 10 I listed are just the ones I can come up with at the top of my head. Hopefully I was able to remember the most important ones. But who knows?? I'm an old lady already so pardon me if missed some important events in my life...hmmm...but then again, only me would know that, right? TOINK!!!

It's 2010 ~ and it's been a while since I've updated this poor blog of mine. What can I say? BUSY, maybe? That's partly why but I can't say I'm THAT busy to ignore this blog. It's just poor time management on my part.

I wish I can say that I'll be better at managing my time this year but I'd rather not say that.

One of the things that a WAHM like me takes pride in being a WAHM is the flexibility of our schedule. That means I can do things at my own time in my own pace. It's what everybody wants, right? Flexibility. That's true to a certain degree. But there are times when I wish I don't have that much flexibility. Why? For one, I tend to disregard other things and concentrate only on some. Not good. The result? I have some unfinished chores here, there and everywhere.

I've been a WAHM for the last 7 years or so. In all those years, I've never really followed a schedule. The only schedule I follow is the one that involves family. No matter how busy [or lazy] I am, the little one's needs are always a priority...followed by the husband's and my needs. Work? That's where flexibility comes in. I work when I can. The downside...work is NOT always there waiting for me. By the time I'm done with the 'priorities', there is a big chance that work won't be there anymore. Sometime I feel bad that I am not able to earn some but that's how it is. The husband and I always say: Little One is the priority with a capital P...and that won't change for as long as we're around.

This year, I'll TRY to manage my time more efficiently. Hopefully, I'll be able to attend to things I neglected last year [like this BLOG] on a regular basis. I am also hoping that I will be able to start some things I should have started years ago. I won't be naming what those things are to keep me from humiliating myself if I won't push through with them again....haha.

That's it. No big new year "brouhaha resolutions" for me. The good thing about New Years...they always come no matter what. That means, we can always go back to making some 'new year's resolutions', right?

Back from Hibernation

...and it's not even winter yet. I wasn't really "hibernating". I am just busy with work the last few weeks. In my last entry here, I mentioned that it's been really slow on the work front. A few days after that, work started coming in. We're still busy but I wanted to take a few minutes to wish those who are in this part of the world a.....

I have a lot of things to be thankful for. Like I said, work flow has been kinda' steady. We're continuing to survive the economic crisis. Above all, my family is healthy and happy. And for that I am very very thankful.

For those who 'may' drop by here and are not familiar with what's being celebrated on Thanksgiving day, I did a quick search on Wikipedia and this is what came up:

Being a WAHM

It's a slow day today at work so I decided to jot down my thoughts in being a Work-at-Home Mom. Whatever I write here are my personal opinions and/or experiences as a WAHM.

Being able to work from home is a blessing for someone like me who does not drive [yet]. As a matter of fact, my inability to drive is one of the 2 prime reasons I decided to try my luck in finding a telecommuting job. What's the other prime reason? Motherhood.

But those 2 primary reasons are not the only things to be considered when deciding to work from home. There's a lot of other important things to think about before taking the plunge diving into the work at home industry. So what things did I consider before getting into this thing called telecommuting?

*Family Income. Questions like: Can we survive with only one income while I look for something I can do from home? I was already pregnant when we decided that I should give it a shot to work from home. Understandably we were a bit scared that we may not be able to make ends meet especially with a baby on the way. But we were able to work around it for me to start my quest for an online job.

*Do I have what it takes to be a 'telecommuter'? Self-discipline is a must when working from home. It's very easy to get distracted since I have no one breathing down my neck. I am essentially my "own boss"....although I do have a boss.

These were only 2 of the many things I tried to think about before finally coming up with a decision. About 7 years later, I'm still working from home. Hopefully, I'll be able to do it 7 or more years to go.

Winter yet?

It feels like it anyway. And in other states, it does not only feel like it's winter, it looks like it is with the snow piling up already.

Per the 7-day forecast from the TBO.com site, our 'cold' weather is not going to last for long. It seems the coldest [at least this week] was this morning which was in the 40s. The weekend weather was very nice. I was able to go out and pull some weeds with the sun shining brightly.

I am inside the comfort of home so the cold [or hot] weather doesn't really bother me. If it gets too cold for me, I just turn on the heat. If it gets too hot, then AC it is. Right now, the heater is on. Can you say: WIMP WAHM??? LOL! I may have to turn it off later on because it will be in the 70s in the afternoon.

Anyway, it's another Monday again. In about 2 weeks, Halloween will be here. The little one already knows what she wants to be and we ordered some of her costume already. The most important item has to be shipped yet. I am hoping it makes it or we will be really disappointed. We ordered it at the beginning of this month and as of today, it hasn't even shipped yet. Arggh! I've been in contact [via email] with the seller and she's assuring me that the item will be here by Halloween so we'll see.

Aside from the aggravation because of this much delayed delivery, I've also been stressed out because of a software I need to install for work. The software has so many bugs that I decided not to install it until they get rid of all of them. It seems the tech people that developed it are doing a "trial and error" because they want us to let them know of the problems we encounter while installing it. Yeah, right! I wouldn't take the risk of my computer crashing just because they couldn't make it right the first time.

Work was released and we were told to use the new software which I hadn't downloaded yet. So I went ahead to download it. It took me approximately 2 days to do it because of, yes, BUGS! I was able to install it nonetheless. But it was so so so sllloooowwww that I was only able to do very little work. Our boss said that they're going to address the issues as soon as we're done with the project. Ugh! That means there will be more de-bugging in the near future.

Earthquake...Tsunami....Typhoon...Flooding

I know that a lot of people are in really bad situation because of all that's happening brought about by the different calamities that took place within days of each other. Those affected by the massive flooding in the Philippines have not even recovered yet when the news about the tsunami in the Samoas came. A day after the tsunami, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake in Indonesia occurred. Because of all these, I can't help but think...

Is Mother Nature telling us something? I'm sure I'm not the one thinking this. Or am I?

One of the things I do on a daily basis is browse the internet for the latest news. The news in the past couple of years have been full of the economic crisis that the world is facing. The past few days though, it seems that the crisis has been taking a back seat giving way to all the devastating effects these natural calamities have causing.

As I am writing this, the Philippines is again bracing for another typhoon. They are labeling it as a super typhoon. The worst part is, it seems to be taking the same path that Ondoy took. I am hoping and praying that this latest typhoon changes direction because those who got hit the hardest by Ondoy can't take another devastation. It's just WAY too soon.

...an UPDATE! Ha! It seems that's all I've been doing on this blog. Updates and more updates.

Not much happening around here actually. I guess the saying 'no news is good news' would have to do for now.

Home front...same-o same. I had a couple of appointments with regards to my 'hyperthyroidism' saga. Last week was blood work appointment and this week, today actually, was my doctor's appointment. It turned out to be 'good visit' because he reduced the dosage of my medication. That means it's actually working. Yippeee! But I'm not going to be overly-excited because my thyroid still has 'ADD'...but I'm happy enough.

Work front...still kinda' slow. One of the companies I work for has steady work. It's not much [as my boss likes to say], but it's still work and it's steady.

My latest work-at-home gig is going well so far. It's not as busy as I first anticipated it to be but it's something. It's definitely a part-time job but I'm liking it so far. Right now I don't care much about the money I make with them. I am more concerned in 'learning the ropes' so to speak.

Anyway, it's now officially Autumn. A lot of people are actually waiting for this season to get a break from the scorching heat of summer. Since Autumn only lasts a couple of months, it won't be long before we hear people complaining again not because of heat but because of freezing temperatures. But for now let me just say....

Early Bird or Night Owl?

Which one are you? When I was still working on an 8-5 job, I was definitely an early bird or shall say, a morning person. I didn't have a choice but to be one. I was a "slave of the clock" so to speak. That meant going to bed before the clock hits 10 PM and waking up before the clock hits 6 AM. That was my life for more than 10 years. But that's all in the past now.

Now that I am a WAHM, I have the choice if I want to be an early bird or a night owl. Sort of, anyway. The time I go to bed at night is MY decision. The time I have to get out of bed in the morning...that's a whole different story. In other words, it's not ALWAYS my decision when I should get out of bed and it's called 'mommyhood'.

During the first few years of my being a WAHM, I would work until 2AM most days. The little one was just a baby then so her sleeping wasn't the best. Instead of waking up in the middle of the night to attend to her, I would choose to stay up late and work in case she'd need me. I got used to that so for a few years, I was definitely a night owl.

Now that she no longer wakes up to be fed or changed, I can go to bed pretty much after she does...but I sometimes don't. I am no longer staying up till 2 AM but I still go to bed later than I would want to. The result? Me having a hard time getting up early, well, earlier.

Just like today and the other day. It's easy for me to wake up and get ready. The hard part is staying up alert throughout the day. Ugh! We had an early delivery earlier this week so we needed to be up by 7. The husband stayed home until after the delivery which meant he left a little late than normal. Today was my appointment for some blood tests and I scheduled it at 7 AM. Hubby has to drive us that's why it's that early. Everything went well with the visit to the lab but guess what? I am sooooo sleepy right now. I could have taken a nap but I didn't think it would be any good so I just stayed up. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep good tonight.

It is days like today that make me want to go back to my old sleeping routine. Being out and about that early in the morning is very refreshing. It also enables me to do more as far as chores and work are concerned. Hmm...maybe I will...go back to my old 'sleeping-waking' routine, eh?

4 More Months....

...and 2009 will be over? Actually, it's a little less than that because it's the 4th of September already as I'm typing this. Where did time go? Nothing much changed with me except a few pounds here and there, a few additional gray hair on my head and a new WAHJ.

Yes, I have a new work-at-home job. I just started last week so it's my second week with the new gig. I still have the old WAHJs but it's been so slow so I decided to start hunting for a new one a few weeks ago. Well, let me correct that. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for a potential work-at-home job even if I have a few already. You just never know when that "perfect" [wah] job would come along. It doesn't matter if it's a temporary one or something longer lasting. What matters most is being able to gain that experience as an additional 'ammunition' in your CV, right?

Due to some confidentiality agreement I signed, I cannot reveal what kind of job it is or which company I work for but I can at least say that it involves a lot of phone work. One thing I would like to say though is legitimate work-at-home jobs exist. I have been working from home for the last 7 years and thousands have been working from home way longer than I've been doing it.

Be patient and keep on looking. One day you'll get that 'dream work-at-home job'. YOU JUST HAVE TO LOOK FOR IT....

Long Overdue Post

This blog has been left idle for a long time. It's been almost a month since my last post. What can I say? I've been quite busy the past few weeks and that's busy in a good way.

Work has been coming in sporadically the last few weeks which means that work is there one day, then no work for a few days. That's much better than no work at all. My schedule has been crazy because I drop almost anything I'm doing as soon as I get emails that work is available for the taking, and blogging is almost always the first that gets dropped.

Aside from that, I am also fortunate enough to land another Work-at-home job. Yep, another WAHJ for me. I know I am EXTREMELY LUCKY. A lot of people are getting laid off from their jobs and a lot more couldn't find any so I am really thankful that I have not only the privilege to work at home but to find a job during these difficult economic times.

I have a few topics I really want to blog about in this blog but because of my crazy schedule lately, I haven't been able to do so. I am hoping to do that in the coming days...fingers crossed, again. I just wish I know how to manage my time more efficiently. In the meantime, let me just say...

Productive Weekend!

Finally! A weekend without much rain so we were able to do the things we wanted to. It wasn't completely free of rain though. It did rain a little on Saturday just after the husband finished mowing. We originally planned of planting some bottlebrush trees along the property but it had to wait because mother nature decided to sprinkle the newly cut grass.

Sunday was a totally dry day though. Tree planting was done as planned. We [more like 'he', the husband] planted 6 bottle brush trees. We thought we would need a couple more but we decided to stick with the 6 we already have. Hubby bought them last weekend. The only glitch we had was we ran out of plant food and dirt. But super hubby flew..err, drove to Lowe's and got what we needed and then some.

I tried to pull some weeds while he was planting while the little one helped him by 'watching'...LOL. We helped him by putting mulch around them. It was a fun experience for the little one of course. We're planning in planting some more plants this weekend. Maybe around the big trees in the backyard. The little one sowed some flower plants a few weeks ago and some came out victorious while the others decided to 'perish'. The plants are now ready to conquer the big world, yard, so we're going to let them loose soon.

Now we just have to wait for them to grow....with a lot of watering involve of course. Well, let's hope it rains enough so they can be watered without me moving a finger. Ha!

Nothing Much....

...going on around here. Life has been pretty boring as usual. The weather is still as unpredictable as it has always been. We were spared of rain for the past few days. It did rain a little bit last night but it didn't last long. It's very hot outside though so even if it's not raining, we don't go out much because it's just way too hot.

Other than the 'exciting' weather we have around here, nothing much has been happening. Work is at a standstill. Not sure when it will be busy again but I'm hoping it's going to be soon. You would think I'd be updating this blog more now that work is slow but I'm not. Ugh!

Anyway, it's midweek again and weekend is of course just around the corner. No big plans for us. I'm thinking we can go see a movie or something this weekend. There's a few I want the little one to see....Up and Night of the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.

Up is on 3d I believe so it would be neat to let the little one see it. We saw Aliens vs. Monsters in 3D and she loved it. We didn't see Night of the Museum 1 in theaters but we caught it on FX this weekend and she also liked it...so, it would be great for her to see the sequel. Hopefully, the weekend will be dry so we can do that.

Been A While...but...

Aside from that, my time on the computer has been limited because of bad weather around here. It's been raining forever. On most days, there's even lightning/thunder to boot.

Two Weeks

It's been that long since I last updated this blog. Mother's Day has come and gone and I wasn't even able to post something about it here. Was I busy? No. Was my internet out? No. I was just not in the mood to post I guess. I did some posts in my other blog though. Not much but at least it's updated.

So what happened in the last 2 weeks? Well, I had a good Mother's day for starters. Our little one was very excited about it [just like any the other occasion] so she's been giving me cards almost everyday leading to Mother's Day itself. Yes, I have one thoughtful little angel. Of course the Dad is always her 'partner in crime', so to speak. If you want to read what she did to surprise me, you can read it here. I also posted the cards she made me here and the store-bought card, here. I love all the cards but the ones she made are more precious to me, of course.

Work wise. S-L-O-W! As in no work for 2 weeks already. I am hoping that it would start to pick up last week but it didn't. Oh well, I guess that's the economy speaking.

One not-so-exciting thing that happened to me during my absence from this blog was that I had an allergic reaction to my prescription medicine. It happened on a weekend so my doctor's office was close. I gave him a call to tell him what I thought I was having an allergic reaction to the meds he prescribed but he DISAGREED saying that I've been on them for 3 weeks so there was a slim chance I'd have the reaction 3 weeks after. Monday, he asked me to come to tell me what we already knew...ALLERGIC REACTION! I almost walked out on him but I tried to hold it. He took me off those meds and asked me to wait 2 weeks before I start taking the new ones he prescribed me.

That's my life the past 2 weeks. Hopefully it won't take another 2 weeks before I update this blog again. Fingers crossed!

6) Troubleshoot computers so I don't wait for hubby to fix every little problem I encounter with it.

7) Make every great wish come true...especially my little one's wishes.

8) Draw... I can't draw a straight line even if my life depended on it.

Neglected!

That's how this blog is probably 'feeling'...if it has 'feelings'. I've been quite busy with the hustle and bustle of life.

Work is still sporadic. I'm trying to schedule everything [especially blogging] around it but it's kinda' hard when you don't know when work will come in. Another downside of my job I guess. I wish I can find a WAHJ that has some kind of a schedule so I know when work is there...but...

Aside from that, nothing much going on with me. I am still on medication for my thyroid problem. I have more doctor's appointment in the future of course. I need to get some lab work done - blood test - to see if the medication is working or not.

Hubby's work is slow right now. I hate that because our bread and butter is his job. What I make with my online jobs are just extras...and with how slow my work is, there is not much extra coming in as well.

Hopefully, I'll be able to update this blog and my other blog!

The Week That was..

I had one of the busiest week in a long time. It's not because of work or my family but because of some health issues that concern me. Nothing 'that' serious though. At least I'm hoping it's not serious. Anyway, I went in for not one but two doctor appointments. The first one was with a family doctor who in turn referred me to an ophthalmologist. Aside from those visits, I also had to go have some blood tests and an ultrasound on my thyroid. I have to go back to both doctors in the next 2 weeks and another visit to the lab for a CAT scan for my left eye.

How's that for being busy? I don't go to the doctor that much so those visits certainly came as a shock to me. The last time I went in was for shingles which was in November of last year. I am hoping my visits in the next 2 weeks will be my last for a while....fingers crossed of course.

With the news that more than 600, 000 people lost their jobs during the month of February, unemployment is now at its highest at 8.1 % since early 1980s. This brings the number of unemployed people to almost 2 million in a span of 3 months.

Not long ago, one of the companies I work for has filed for bankruptcy. I've been working for this company since early 2002 so I feel bad about it closing. This also makes me a direct casualty of this ongoing recession. Now I am trying to find something I can do to replace that job I lost...but it's proving to be a difficult task.

As I was browsing the news yesterday, I came across an article titled: 7 Best Part-Time Jobs. Of the 7 in the list, I did 3 of them already. Private Tutoring, Substitute Teaching and Copy Editing.

Here's the list I lifted from the article:

1. Tax Preparer
Thousands of people need help every year to file their returns. Part-time tax preparers are often accountants who know their way around deductions and forms, and who want extra income. Though the job typically peaks in the spring, many clients choose to retain their tax professional as a year-round personal accountant and adviser.

Salary: Set your own fee. H&R Block typically charges anywhere from $100 to $200 for their services, so you can probably charge up to $80 and still offer a bargain.

2. Substitute Teacher
Many states offer substitute teaching positions without requiring a teaching degree. Often, anyone with a bachelor’s degree is eligible, provided they pass a background check and interview. The length of employment varies and you should be flexible for days when you get a frantic last-minute call at 6 a.m., but it’s a good way to put your education to use while aiding in the education of others.
Salary: Varies depending on the state. In Oregon, for example, substitutes get about $150 a day.

3. Private Tutor
Jeremiah LeBrash started tutoring in college as a way to make some extra income. He’s now making enough money for it to be his full-time job. “I started out teaching SAT prep for Kaplan, but I was only making $20 an hour,” he says. “I realized I could do it on my own, give my students one-on-one attention, and charge twice as much.” LeBrash now charges $80 an hour for test preparation and $60 for general math and science help.
Salary: Companies like Kaplan and The Princeton Review pay tutors anywhere from $20 to $60 an hour, depending on the test they teach and the size of the class. Private tutors, like LeBrash, can set their own fee.

4. Part-Time Receptionist
Answering telephones and receiving packages may not be the most glamorous job, but according to career counselor Judith Gerberg, it’s a great opportunity to network. Gerberg, president of the Career Counselors Consortium, knew a laid off radio DJ who ended up working as a receptionist for a law firm. She soon became acquainted with a filmmaker client who loved her music knowledge so much, he hired her as an associate producer. “Lawyers and small businesses always need administrative help,” says Gerberg. “You might be making minimum wage, but keep your ego under wraps. You never know who will walk through the door.”
Salary: Varies, but can be in the $20,000-a-year range.

5. Computer Technician
Gerberg says there is an increased need for tech support, as more people move their businesses home. Computer technicians make basic repairs, set up wi-fi and perform other jobs. Companies are also looking for individuals who can build websites, which makes this a no-brainer for anyone with a little creativity and HTML experience.
Salary: Set your own fee. Tech support rates vary according to the job, rates can be around $30 an hour or more.

6. Copy Editor
“Copy editing is proofreading,” says Rachel Goldman, who took her skills honed in her day job as an online news producer and used them to score part-time work as well. In addition to checking texts for spelling, punctuation, grammar and formatting errors, "I also help the person brainstorm and flesh out their work,” says Goldman. Although she started out editing essays for college students, Goldman is now working on documents such as patent applications and television scripts as well.
Salary: Goldman’s fees vary based on length and subject matter, but she estimates that she makes about $100 per document.

7. Direct Seller
Companies such as Amway and Avon allow people to make money on their own time, while offering incentive programs like discounted insurance. And while the recession may have curbed consumer spending, Avon recently reported earnings that were above expectations. “Our products are selling well because it’s affordable luxury,” says Lindsay Blaker, an Avon spokesperson.
Salary: Blaker says she’s seen reps make anywhere from a few hundred dollars a month to six-figure annual salaries. “I met someone who went from a corporate setting to becoming a full-time seller because she was making just as much money staying at home,” she says. “People love the flexibility of the job.”

...with my template? Everything on the template disappeared...the header, the background color. I didn't do anything. I thought the site where I got it was down but that can't be that case. I have the same template on my 'trial and error' blog and it looked fine when I opened it earlier.

So now I'm back to the blogger templates just to make it presentable enough for those who will take time to visit. I'd probably change it again tomorrow or the next day...or when I get the chance.

Baby Daddy....

Yes, a baby having a baby of his own! Shocking is probably an understatement. Yeah yeah... I know that in the old days, a lot of younger people used to have kids. But that was then, and this is now. In this day and age, parents should be more responsible. And when I say parents, I didn't mean the 13 year old boy and his 15 year old girlfriend. I meant...THEIR parents!!

Look at him! You can tell by just looking at his angelic face that he does not know what he is doing! Yes, I applaud them for choosing to keep the baby instead of aborting early on....that's because I'm pro-life.

At 13, I didn't even know how one gets pregnant....seriously. But that was a long time ago. Kids now are well informed so it should be expected that they should know better. In a lot of schools today, students are asked to bring home a doll that has baby-like qualities and take care of it for days. Yes, the doll cries....at any given time....day or night. The 'doll' has to stay close with its 'mother' or it will throw a fit...or something like that.

I honestly feel scared for these new parents and their daughter. How will they survive? Will they live together now that they have a child? I read somewhere that the girl still lives with her father and siblings and the baby daddy has been spending a lot of time there as well. Let's just hope that they wait a while before having another one.

Oh, I just read in the news that the local police there are not pressing any charges against anyone. If it were up to me, I'd probably be looking at the adults looking after these children. It's their responsibility after all considering these kids are just minors.

...that this week will bring in some work as far as my coding is concerned. It's been weeks since we had some work from any of the companies I work for. For a while there, I thought we won't be affected much by the economic meltdown [yeah right] because we were getting so much work but it suddenly stopped! Oh well, I guess no one will be spared by it, eh?

It's a holiday today [I think] because it's President's Day so we may not hear from work until tomorrow. Still, I am hoping that we'd get some work one way or another.

This is the biggest downside of being a WAHM. We are ICs or independent contractors so we get paid only if we work. It bites but that's the way it is. Thankfully my family does not rely on the money I make with my work-at-home jobs or we will be in big trouble.

Anyway, here's hoping that work will come in as soon as possible to keep us busy for the months to come. Wishful thinking? Probably...but it's free to make a wish, right?

Octuplets Mom...

It's all over the news. If you haven't heard about her and her growing family [read: 14 children], then get out from under that rock...LOL...

At first, she was being hailed. Imagine carrying 8 babies in your womb! I only carried one and I thought it was heavy...but 8? People thought what she did was incredible...until more information came out.

First, that she's already a mother of 6 children. Second, that she's actually living with her parents. Third, that she doesn't have a husband or a partner to help raise the kids. Added to these, she's not working. So the big question is: How is she going to support her 14 children?

Then she went on TV and was interviewed by the Today Show. I didn't watch the interview myself so I have no idea how she fared there...but I read a lot of criticisms. as a result of that interview. Apparently, she said some things in the interview that are not really accurate. One of which is her denial of getting any kind of help from the state. She's actually getting food stamps...which is given by the state of course.

Now she has a website where visitors can only do 2 things. Leave a comment and donate! Kinda' fishy, isn't it? I was also surprised to find out that she hired a publicist and an agent. Just like a movie star, eh? If rumors are true, she's actually shopping for a TV show. So yes, just like a movie star....

Not quite sure what happened to the header of my blog but it has disappeared. I was trying to find a good header to replace the one that came with this free template and I don't remember taking out but it's now MIA.

I guess I have to start looking for a header ASAP or this blog will look odd without it. I may even change the template if I find another one more fitting with the theme of this blog. I haven't done any work on this blog today but we'll get on it as soon as get done with my tasks...

Template Dilemma

I've been looking for a template for this blog. I think I've seen more than a hundred different templates but I still haven't found the one I REALLY like.

I am not really that knowledgeable when it comes to this so, yes, I'm struggling. I really wish I am like those bloggers who can change their templates easily...but I am not.

I will keep on looking though and I won't stop until I find it. For now this one will do.

Yay! After 2 days of tinkering in My Account of the GoDaddy site, I was able to finally move this blog into my own domain! And I did it all on my own...well, guided by some online search results. At least I didn't have to ask for help like last time. I was ready to do that though, ask a friend to help me convert this blog to my own domain, if I wasn't able to make it work. But I DID it...

So what's the plan now that I have 2 blogs with my own domains? Nothing definite yet. I'm still trying to see what I should to maximize the use of this new blog of mine.

Accomplishments for today:

- changing this blog to my own domain

- loads of laundry

Yeah! Now, if only the weather cooperates. I can add "weeding" in my list. Ha!

Working at home is something I have learned to love. I've been doing it for the last 6 years and if I have a choice, I will NOT exchange it for a job outside the house. But...

The past few weeks have been extremely slow as far as work flow is concerned. I'm certain that the economy has everything to do with it. We still get work every now and then but it usually lasts less than 4 hours.

There are thousands of WAHM/D/P like me. One company I work for has about a thousand independent contractors. That means that if that company releases work, there will be a thousand people trying to grab something. I personally don't waste my time if there's only very little work since it's just not worth the time and aggravation since it not only involves grabbing the work. We have to read manuals to be able to do it right.

But now that work is on 'hiatus', that means I am not also getting paid since I am an independent contractor. No work, no pay.

Should I start looking for something I can do outside the home? Or should I go ahead and look for other work at home opportunities? Both will be very hard...again, because of the economy. I don't even drive yet so that's another reason why I can't look for jobs outside the house.

I guess I'm stuck with looking for another WAHJ for now, eh?

How I wish our economy starts getting better instead of the other way around. Sigh...

WAHM Talks!

Yep, this blog is now officially my 'venting' machine! I have not posted much on this blog because I got too busy with ummm...life?

Right now, work is a bit [really!] slow. So I am trying to attend to the things [this blog included] I've neglected for quite a while. I promise though that this blog will be taken cared of from now on....fingers, toes & eyes crossed!

So why "WAHM talks"? I am WAHM...which stands for "Work-At-Home-Mom". Since I am rarely in the company of people my age [except for the husband of course], I wanted to have a space where I can express myself...READ: T-A-L-K....

This blog will serve as my 'water cooler'. I will post anything and everything my little heart desires in this little corner of mine.

Just doing a quick post here as I have neglected this blog big time. I have been busy of course. With what??? My work at home job, of course. Well, it's only one of the many reasons why I'm busy as I have a full schedule almost everyday.

We moved not too long ago and we're still in the midst of putting stuff together. We moved but not completely. Some of our stuff are still in the old house. I have not unpacked some of the boxes and they are still in the garage. Mostly books actually but we need some of them already so I have some unpacking in the near future.

Work for one of the companies I work for is just so busy. Since I'm one of team leaders/supervisors I am needed to work at least a few hours a day...just to be around in case questions from my team arise. Other than that, I can pretty much do or work anytime I want to.

So I'm going to sign off here for now....as work is calling me again....

LiveOps...

LiveOps is one of the first companies that offers work-at-home jobs I came across with. It was in 2002 when I started looking for one and LiveOps came highly recommended by a lot of people in the chat board I frequent to.

So what is LiveOps? It's a virtual call center that hires work at home agents to take inbound calls from customers who may want order some products they either saw on TV or some kind of a brochure.

I applied for them and another virtual call center called Work At Home Agent. I made to both, which means I passed the modules that they want their agents to go through before they're hired. I even went through the 'mock-up' calls where a trainer would pretend as a customer. But...I didn't have the nerve to actually take 'live calls'. When I got hired by a coding company, I decided to turn my back on my 'almost' work-at-home job.

Anyway, just recently I read somewhere that LiveOps is being sued by some of its agents. I came across the Class Action Lawsuit against the company in the same chat board I found it.

Here's an excerpt from the Class Action Lawsuit:

The Plaintiffs allege that they and other similarly situated Home Agents (1) were improperly classified as "independent contractors" by LiveOps, Inc., (2) that LiveOps, Inc. controlled most, if not all, major aspects of the Home Agent's job, (3) that they were not paid for any training time associated with the job at LiveOps, Inc., (4) that they worked many hours without receiving the equivalent of the federal minimum wage, and, (5) that they worked more than 40 hours during some weeks and was not paid the federally required overtime rate of pay. The Plaintiffs allege that by not paying them correctly, LiveOps, Inc. violated the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1939, 29 U.S.C. §216(b).

I like exchanging links with other bloggers. I really do. But why do we exchange links with other bloggers? Is it to make the list longer and longer and even longer??

I admit it. When I started blogging, I just wanted to keep adding in my blog roll. I just wanted to collect 'blogger friends' in other words.

And that's what happened. My blogger list is now so long, I had to make another one...and I'm sure I may have missed some of those who wanted a link exchange as they get lost in the shuffle.

So now comes this question that has been burning in my head: Do you get to visit those who are in your blog roll regularly? Or do you just wait for them to come for a visit and then visit them back? How do you choose who to visit?

I have my answers to these questions but I'd rather keep them to myself for now.

Test and Online Scoring....

Online scoring is another work-at-home job that I have done myself. It's a seasonal job though. I have only worked for one company but there is another I know that hires online scorers but I'm sure there are more out there that probably do that.

The job is very easy. But I find it really boring. Scorers log on to their system and work on students' answers on some kind of a standardized test. Simple huh? Yes, it is but like I said it can be boring because it is monotonous and it's a good sleep inducer. LOL!

Usually, the cycle only lasts for about a month or a little over a month. The pay is better than a lot of other jobs, work-at-home or even those that are done outside the home. If only it's offered the whole year-round, I'd probably be doing this even if it bores me to tears.

Time Management

Or the lack thereof. I tried to limit my blog hopping today because I wanted to take some break. I still did some hopping...mostly 'hit backs' to those who came to visit my PinayWAHM blog.

I have been a very active blogger. It's just the way I am. Whenever I commit on doing something, I will really try my very best to honor the commitment and blogging is no exception.

Being a WAHM has its pros and cons just like any job that is done outside of the home. One of the cons is probably the tendency to mismanage time. Unfortunately, I am guilty of this. I don't think that I am even trying hard enough to manage my time so I could be very productive. I already attempted to do this once...take some time off since I came to a conclusion that a lot of things are being neglected because I stay in front of the computer pretty much all the time. But it only lasted for a day or two. After that, I'm back where I started.

So how do I change this? I honestly don't know. I stayed away from the computer as much as I could the whole day today but I did not really do anything productive. I just watched TV and did my usual chores. Tomorrow is laundry as well as cleaning day for me so I would be on and off again. But what I really want is that 'solid' schedule that I can follow pretty much everyday.

The problem is: Isn't flexibility one of the perks of being a WAHM? I surely think so. So now here I am still at a loss on what to do with this dilemma of mine. Oh well....I guess I'll try to come up with a plan someday.

WAHM Job Part III

It took a while before I was able to update this blog. It was just a busy few weeks for me that is why. I have been blogging a lot and doing my other work as well...which is known as Coding. It's not as busy as it was a few years ago but I'm just glad that I am able to make a few bucks here and there. Anyway, this brings me to the next WAH job that I have been doing for a few years now...about 5 years.

So what is Coding? It's basically Data Entry....and it's one of the most sought after jobs in the work-at-home or telecommuting industry. A lot of people can probably do this but not everyone can get into it because of stiff competition. If anything, luck is usually what's needed to get ones foot in the "Coding industry" door.

So how did I get in? Luck like I said. When I started looking for a work-at-home job, I applied to almost all of the coding companies. I even got scammed once....yes, just once. I fell for those "pay a one-time $15 Fee for Training Materials" scams that are all over the net. I though just like any other job seekers out there are thinking. It's only $15 so it's not a lot money...but can you imagine if at least 5 people fall for it a day? That would be $75 a day and there's a big chance that most of these people won't bother get their money back because....yes, it's only $15. Not me though...as soon as I got the so called 'training materials', I knew right away that it's a scam. What did I do? I filed a dispute with PayPal and thankfully, they refunded my money.

Okay before I get any further, let me explain first what's in the 'training material' first. Usually, this training material would come in an email as an attachment. It's about 20 pages [possibly even more] of instructions...on how to convince other to pay $15 or even more for that same 'training material'. Yes, it's recycled over and over and over again. I bet that same material is still in existence up until today...and there are still a lot of innocent people desperate for a work-at-home job who are falling for it.

Back to Coding and how I got into it. Like I mentioned luck was on my side. You see a big coding company, originally called as Onsite but is now known as Onsite3, did massive hiring back in 2002. Since I had an active application with them, I was one of those they called. I took the test and passed...the rest is history as they say.

After getting hired by Onsite3, it was easier to get in the other companies. Most of the other companies require experience that's why. Right now I work for 2 other companies aside from Onsite3. One is very new while the other has been in business for a while and have been bought out recently. I am not listing their names simply because they don't have any opening right now. One company I used to work for is called Cypher but they ceased operation at the end of October 2007 unfortunately. There are others that also closed down.

Right now it's been very slow in the Coding industry. The new company hasn't had work for the last few weeks while Onsite3 releases small projects every now and then. Only one has been having work for the last couple of weeks.

That's about it. Maybe one day I will be able to post here when one of the companies I'm working is hiring.

Jewelry Making...

... as a home-based business? Why not, right? A lot of people are into jewelry so it can be a good business.

I am not much of an artist but from what I have read, even those like me who do not have even a single drop of creativity in my blood can actually pull it off.

I have not tried it but if work stays this slow much longer, I may just give it a shot. I almost tried one before but I got busy with my other jobs.

It's the one where the company will send you a kit to make some crosses then send them back for approval. If they pass the inspection, you get paid for the ones you finished. But some made more money by buying the kit and selling the necklaces in fairs or friends.

Not sure what happened to the company already since I have not heard about it in a while. From what I read before, some did not get paid but some are still doing it. So it's worth checking out...it maybe one way to make some extra bucks to pay for some gasoline at least.

Been A While...

Since I posted on this blog. I got real busy with life in general. My paid blogging picked up a little bit so I have been busy with that as well.

My domain - Pinay WAHM - finally got a rank after about 3 months. It's just a PR2 but it's better than an N/A or a PR0. I am trying to maximize the allowed posts because I'm sure the PR will disappear again one of these days. Ironically, the reason for that PR to disappear is what else but the paid posting I've been doing on it.

Imagine this...when a blog has no PR, there is very little chance that it would get any higher paying opportunities. As a result, majority of the posts will be the unpaid ones...which will in turn return give the blog a higher PR. As soon as PR is given, big paying opps will be available for the taking. So what do we do? Start grabbing those opps as much as possible. Therefore flooding your blog with paid opps now. What's going to happen? The PR will be taken away...resulting to non-paid opps again....and the CYCLE CONTINUES!!!

Oh well...I thought I'd post here today for a change. I have not posted in my Teacher's Corner blog as well. But that's only for a day or two. I'd probably leave that blog idle for a little while so it will be given a PR...hahaha!

Pop-Ups, Widgets, Add-Ons...atbp..

The past few days have been kinda' frustrating for a lot bloggers specifically those who are using the Blogger. Well, it's not a problem with Blogger per se but it seems that only those who are using Blogger are the ones greatly affected by what's happening.

Okay...so what am I talking about here. I am talking about the POP-UPS that have been coming up everytime some blogs are visited. I have had my share of seeing those unwanted pop-ups. They vary from simple ads like travel advertisements to PORN pop-ups. Yes, those! Fortunately the pop ups are not causing any virus or anything of the nature but it does not make them less stressing.

So where do the pop-ups came from? Actually, there is no way of really knowing where they come from. This is what we know right now, per our experience. It seems that some of the pop-ups are brought about by some of the WIDGETS that we use to make our blogs pretty and equipped in some ways. Well now, these widgets seem to equip our blogs with pop-ups as well. Unfortunately, the pop-up blocker we activate on our browsers don't work on these pop-ups so they still come up even with the blocker on.

So which widgets are causing these? Again, this is only per some bloggers account and experience. One is the Rank Widget. A blogger friend said that after changing her templates she started installing the widgets one at a time. As soon as she installed this specific widget, the pop-ups started. So she took it down and the pop-ups stopped.

So a word of advice. If you have some widgets in your blog and you are having some pop-up attacks...try removing the widgets then reinstall them one at a time and do the process of elimination.

Spring Forward....

So today is the day!! The day for what??? The day to adjust your clocks 1 hour onward, forward, or whatever you want to call it. This 'spring forward does not only happen here in the US. A lot of other countries also do it.

So why do some countries and some other states do this? I mean adjust their clocks on the second Sunday of March and then again on the second Sunday of November. There is a long explanation on this one and I won't even dare explain it. If you want to read extensively on this DST or Daylight Savings Time, I found this website with explanation and it's called 'About Daylight Saving Time'. Very imaginative title, don't you think?

For someone like me who works at home, there is really no difference except when one of the jobs I do actually requires me to log on to the server at a specific time. But that only happens like 2 months a year for a few weeks. Majority of the time, there is really no need to do that.

The only effect this has on me is it somehow messes my body rhythm. Like right now. I don't feel like it's really 2 o'clock . But this will only last for a day or so. At least I don't have to wake up and go to bed at specific time. That's another advantage of working at home. Ha!

Google Page Rank

Since my last entry is about 'blogging' as a possible WAHJ' [work-at-home job], I thought I'd elaborate more on this so-called Page Rank which is being given by Google.

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I really have no idea how the Page Rank is achieved. What I write here is just what I observe and my own take on the issue.

My 2 other blogs both had a PR of 3 at one point. My own domain used to be a blogspot like this one. It was only about a month old when it was given a PR3 by Google. A couple months ago, I decided to convert it to my own domain because advertisers seem to exclude blogspot from their list of allowed domains. I was advised that its PR would go away as soon as I convert it to my domain. It did and it's still a PR0.

Admittedly, I work more on my Pinay WAHM blog than in my other blogs. I only update my Teacher's Corner occasionally. So I was surprised when I found out that it was given a PR3. Cool. So I started working on that blog more. Guess what...as soon as worked on that blog daily the PR tanked. It's now a PR0 for about month.

So now both my blogs are PR0. I still get some opportunities but not as much as I used to get when one of my blogs had a PR. I'm fine with that until last week.

While I was doing some bloghopping, I noticed that other blogs that used to be PR0 are getting PR 3. Cool. So I tried my blog's PR...nope, both still have a PR0. For kicks, I checked the PR of my old blogspot account...the one that I converted into my own domain. Here's what I saw:

Yes, that one has a Page Rank of 4!!! Why? I have no idea. I'm sure it's not backlinks because all those are on the new domain. The entries are also mostly under the new domain. The only reason I can think of as to why this old blog has a very high PR is because....because...because...nothing!

Jobs that Can be Done at Home Part II...

Since I am not doing anything yet and while I'm waiting for my little one to tell me what she wants for breakfast, I thought I'd start blogging here first. This is my second entry on 'work-at-home jobs'.

In my previous entry on the WAHJ, I blogged about 'phone related jobs'. Another WAHJ that has gained a lot of momentum within the last year or so is 'blogging'! Yes, this thing I am doing right now can also be a work-at-home job. A lot of people make a thousands of dollars a month doing paid blogging.

Paid blogging is a bit tricky though. To be able to get accepted to the paid blogging sites, your blog should at least be a month old and should have some relevant entries. Some sites on thee other hand require that the blog be at least 90 days or 3 months old. Aside from the 'blog age' requirement, your blog/s should also be indexed with Google and/or Yahoo.

Now for the tricky part. One of the most important, if not the most important, things for paid blogging is what is called Google 'Page Rank' or PR. Let me clarify though that I really HAVE NO IDEA how a Google PR is achieved. Different people have different theories. Personally, I am not convinced that there is really a solid basis for this PR that Google is letting the bloggers know. One thing I know though is that Google does not like paid blogging. It's kind of ironic for some. Why? Because a lot of the bloggers out there blog because they want to do some paid blogging someday. So they work their tails off to achieve a good page rank and get accepted by the paid blogging sites then BAM...their PR disappear soon after they start doing the paid blogging. And with the PR going down or disappearing altogether, a blogger's chance of getting higher paying opportunities will be very slim to none.

I still have a lot of things to learn about 'monetizing' my blog. Right now, I am just going with the flow and trying to learn the ropes so to speak. One thing I am hoping though is that the day comes when this so-called Google PR will not be the major factor in getting those higher paying opportunities.

There you have it. My take on another possible work-at-home job: Blogging.

Sick Leave for a Working-at-home Mom???

So what happens when a WAHM like me is a bit under the weather??? Take a break and just rest...the whole day...without worrying about missing a day at work.

Today I have not been feeling well. I think I caught the sniffles that my little one started having about a week ago [Thursday of last week to be exact]. I have allergies so to her and my husband, there is really no difference. I sneeze and blow my nose everyday anyway. But to me it's obvious when I have it.

Anyway, this is one of the advantages I have as a work-at-home Mom. Whenever I am not feeling well, I can just sit back and relax. Well, kinda'. You don't really sit back and relax when you have a kid, do you? The same goes true if my little one is not feeling well, I don't have to worry about asking a boss for a day off to take care of her.

I am an Independent Contractor, which means in most of my work I don't get paid if I don't work. But I have some gigs where I am given a deadline and I get paid as long as I make the deadline. Anyway, I'd rather be resting comfortably at home rather than going to work and possibly spreading what I have to more people.

I am logging off now to rest a bit more. I have to start making dinner in a few.

Typical Day of a Work-at-Home Mom...

I thought I'd blog about this as early as now. I'm not doing anything at the moment anyway. It's one of those days...slow days, work wise. One of the downsides of being a work-at-home Mom like me.

So what's a typical day for me? Everyday, I make it a point to wake up to see my husband off to work. He's a morning person and he has his own small business so he somehow owns his time. It's not always a good thing though because he can work as much as 18 hours a day and his pay will be the same. Anyway, back to the topic. He normally leaves around 5 AM - give or take. So I'd wake up then to see him off. Then back to bed I go...LOL. My 'real' day starts when I wake up from my second 'round of sleep'.

Between 7 -8 AM - wake up
Between 8-9 AM - breakfast with the little one, checking emails, blogs, work if there's any
Between 9-10 AM - Clean-up
Between 10 - 12 Noon - work for me if there's any, school work for the little one.
Lunch time is usually between 12 - 2
Between 2-4 - Work, little one's TV time
Between 4-5 - Wrapping up with whatever I have hanging, more school work for the little one
Around 5-6 - Dinner preparation
Between 6 - 8 - Dinner, Clean-up
Between 8-9:30 - Little one's bedtime routines
Between 10 -12MN - More work if there is any
Around 12 MN [11:30ish] should be bedtime for me or else my allergy will be at its worst.

Next day - Repeat...the routine!

The good thing is the schedule is not strict. I can have a day doing nothing just because I am lazy or not feeling well or the little one is not feeling well. We rarely get sick so the day-off is usually a result of the former - LAZYNESS!

There you have it. That's a typical day for me. I'm sure other work-at-home Moms have their own schedule as well. I try to keep a schedule [in my mind] so as to have some kind of a direction.

Jobs that Can Be Done At-Home....

So what type of jobs can be done at home? I am tempted to say 'practically all of them' but that may not be 100% accurate. Let's face it, there are jobs that just don't fall under the category of work-at-home jobs. Right?

Having sad that, there are a lot of JOBS that can be done at home. But I will only talk about the ones I have first hand knowledge. I will cover one job in one entry plus I will be listing some companies that hire .

Phone Jobs

The name says it all. A lot of phone work involved in this kind of a job. It's actually one of the easiest jobs to land. I got on with one company in my early years of being a WAHM but decided against it because of nerves. Being English not my mother tongue, I just can't master enough courage to call people who may not understand what I am saying. Don't get me wrong. I speak English fluently to the extent that my in-laws and my husband's friends didn't believe at first I was not American BUT I just don't feel confident enough to do phone jobs. Plain and simple.

The company that I got on is called Work At Home Agent. The company is West. I applied [and got accepted] with the company in 2002. A lot has changed since then but the kind of job is basically the same. If you are interested in becoming an agent for them. Visit their Become an Agent page.

Other companies that are hiring home at work agents are:

These are just few of the companies that hire agents that can work at home on a regular basis. They may or may not be hiring at this time but they may be hiring next week or next month. The key is to keep checking. The ones I listed here are agents that accept incoming calls from customers who are either ordering or inquiring about services or products offered by certain companies.

What I wrote here is just one of the many possible phone jobs one can have. Phone jobs also include sales or telemarketing....mostly outgoing calls. Some call this 'solicitation calls' and agents may encounter some not so friendly people in the course of doing this kind of a job. There are also jobs where agents conduct phone surveys.

Working-At-Home...Pros and Cons

Just like every single thing we do, there are pros and cons in working at home. I have been doing it for the last 6 years, more or less, so I know quite a bit about the disadvantages and advantages of doing it.

I believe though that these advantages and/or disadvantages are relative. What I consider an advantage can be a disadvantage to others. So let's just say these are the ones that apply to me.

Let's start with the advantages.

---> I don't have a boss...well, I do but I don't see them face to face.
---> I don't have to follow a strict schedule like an 8-5 job.
---> I save in gas, clothes, make-up etc.
---> I can take a break anytime I want.
---> I work in the comfort of my own home.

Now for the disadvantages.

---> My social life is virtually non-existent.
---> I tend to procrastinate more now because I know I have time...kinda'
---> I stay online more than necessary.
---> I have no desire to learn how to drive.
---> The money is not always desirable. Work is sporadic this is why.
---> Work discipline is not really there.

These are the major ones for me, I think. I listed 6 of each not on purpose but in reality, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. If given this chance again, I would grab it anytime if it means I get to stay with my little at home.

Like I said they may apply to me but not to you. I know I am forgetting some things but I'd reserve them for next time.

This is Teacher's Corner

This is my very first blog. I have a hard time figuring out some things about it so I just didn't mess with it for a while. As a matter of fact, I still have a hard time figuring out this blog. I try to post here as much as I can.

I originally called it: Peek-a-Boo!..LOL. Why? Because I couldn't think of anything to call it. Once I started applying for some paid blogging sites, I decided to change its 'screen name' to Teacher's Corner. Why that name??? Does my being a teacher have to do with it? Definitely.

I have plans of writing more 'education/teacher' related posts here. Again, time is my enemy here. Well, actually, it's more like 'time management'....

Anyway, that's about it. When you get the chance, please visit this other 'place' I call "Teacher's Corner"...

When you have a child, you can't help but wonder who the child really took after. We always like to say she or he takes after you, right?

Well, I got this Look-alike Meter tag from a friend. All you have to do is to upload pics of the family that you want then voila...it's there.

Here is our result. Seems like my hubby and I can't really say she took more than one of us. As you can see, it's fair share...50-50 as they say. LOL...Why not try it with your loved ones.

Btw, the pictures you use will have a major effect on the result...surprised???

It's my own domain. I spend most of my blogging time here since it's easier to work on compared to my other blog...Teacher's Corner which is my very first blog.

I originally wanted to make this blog a resource of some Work-at-Home-Jobs. Well, that didn't happen because LIFE got on the way. I have some work at home jobs and during the time I started this blog, those jobs started picking up. Then paid blogging also happened during those times.

This blog will serve as my playground for a while. Like they say: All work and No play makes Juliana a dull girl!!! Ha!

Anyway, I have been blogging for the last 5 months or so. It's very therapeutic but addictive at the same time. So I guess I can get therapy for this addiction through this blogging thing, eh?

Let's start with some facts about me. I am a teacher by profession but have been on hiatus for the last 7 years now.

I am married to a wonderful man who's been very supportive of my decisions, most of the time anyway. He works his tail off so I can stay home with our little girl.

In my aim to help him, I decided to try my luck online. Fortunately, luck has been on my side most of the time.

I was able to land my first work-at-home job when our little girl was a few months old. I have been on a non-stop hunt since then. Just like blogging, looking for a WAHJ -work-at-home-job - is quite addicting. So even if I have some already, I still look for more.

I have 2 other blogs, Teacher's Corner and Pinay Wahm. Teacher's Corner was originally called Peek-a-Boo. I decided to change its title because I want it to sound more serious and professional. Pinay Wahm is my own domain. Pinay is the coined word for Filipina....Wahm is the abbreviation for "Work-At-Home-Mom/Mother/Mama. So Pinay Wahm and Filipina Wahm basically mean the same.

What do I plan to do with this blog? Hmm...an experimental ground but I am also hoping to come with some useful information here with regards to working at home.
